How We Fight Kleptocracy

OCA confronts kleptocracy with a multi-faceted, people-centered approach that leverages the strengths of our diverse coalition. Our strategy includes:

  • Grassroots Engagement
Through community workshops, social media campaigns, and public forums, we engage citizens – especially youth, women, and marginalized groups – in the fight against corruption. Friends of Angola, for example, works with youth and former combatants to raise awareness and provide civic education. We encourage citizens to share their experiences and use our platform to call for change.

  • Policy & Legal Action
OCA members pursue accountability through legal channels and policy advocacy. For instance, EG Justice collaborates with lawyers and law enforcement worldwide to bring cases against corrupt officials in court. PILC (Chad) documents corruption cases and works within the judiciary to prosecute those responsible. We also advocate for stronger anti-corruption laws and international sanctions against kleptocrats.

  • Data and Transparency Tools
We harness data to expose corruption networks. ADISI-Cameroon gathers open data on grand corruption and publishes monthly reports that shine a light on government malfeasance. We plan to launch a PEP (Politically Exposed Persons) database to help track individuals involved in corruption. By making information public, we reduce the secrecy that kleptocrats rely on.

  • Coalition & Capacity Building
OCA strengthens civil society by sharing skills and resources among our partners. Collectif Sassoufit has developed investigative reports on corruption in Congo and provides media support to empower local unions. We conduct joint training (for example, data journalism academies on wildlife trafficking issues) and coordinate strategies across countries. This collective approach means successes in one country can be replicated in others.

Through these combined tactics, OCA attacks kleptocracy from multiple angles – in the courts, on the streets, online, and in the media. Our approach is inclusive and bottom-up: we elevate community voices and pressure leaders to serve their citizens.

We believe sustained civic pressure, together with strategic advocacy, will gradually dismantle the systems that allow corruption to flourish.
